AI image extender: give your image space to breathe

Give a tightly framed photo more space without squeezing the subject or cutting away another edge. Choose a square, portrait, widescreen or custom canvas and use AI to continue the surrounding scene. Keep the source for comparison and inspect the generated border before saving.

Six ways to use a wider canvas

These scene guides explain what to check alongside the approved extension preview. New scenery is generated, so it should not be treated as a record of what was outside the camera frame.

A landscape for a widescreen wallpaper

Give a vertical lake or mountain photograph a wider setting. Check the horizon, shoreline and tree shapes where the new border joins the source.

More space around a portrait

Prepare a square avatar or portrait feed image with breathing room around the head and hair. Compare facial details and the outline of the subject.

Product photos with room for a headline

Create surrounding space for typography that you add afterward. Inspect the product’s shape, label and cast shadow before using it in an advertisement.

Rooms and architectural scenes

Extend a room or building into a wider layout. Straight walls, furniture edges, reflections and vanishing points need a close visual check.

Illustrations and digital artwork

Add margins around an illustration for a wallpaper or spread. Check whether linework, color blocks and brush texture remain consistent.

Travel photos with a cinematic frame

Open a street or beach scene into a landscape composition. Look for repeated people, implausible objects and discontinuities in the light.

How to extend a photo online

01

Choose the source image

Select, drop or paste one JPG, PNG or WebP up to 15 MB and 40 megapixels. Start with the best available original, including as much useful edge detail as possible.

02

Set the canvas

Choose 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16, or select Custom and enter width and height. Add a short optional edge hint and choose your output format.

03

Generate, inspect and download

Check the displayed credit cost, then start the run. Compare the result with the original and inspect the new edges, subject and geometry before downloading.

Canvas extension at a glance

Purpose

Generate surrounding scene area for a different frame, rather than stretch an existing photograph.

Framing choices

1:1, 4:5, 16:9 and 9:16 presets, plus custom width and height fields.

Credit cost

Each extension run uses 6 credits. The rate is displayed before you start.

Optional guidance

A short edge hint can describe the surrounding material or setting. It is not required.

Input and output

One JPG, PNG or WebP up to 15 MB / 40 MP; choose JPG, PNG or WebP output.

File retention

AI processing uses a provider. Uploads, generated files and download links have a 24-hour deletion window.

Add scenery instead of distorting the photo

Changing a portrait image into a wide rectangle by stretching changes the shapes inside it. Cropping removes content, while a plain border adds space without continuing the scene. Outpainting takes a different approach: it estimates a surrounding environment from the visible edges.

  • Subject preservation: the aim is to keep the original person or product recognizable, without requesting a face swap. Compare the source area after processing.
  • Scene continuity: inspect light direction, color temperature, surface texture and shadows at the join.
  • Useful canvas ratios: choose a frame for the destination, rather than forcing the subject to fit by stretching it.
  • Optional edge hints: a brief material or setting description can guide an ambiguous border; avoid asking for a completely different scene.

Composition controls for an existing photo

Use the controls already in the workbench to describe the surrounding canvas. A source photo is required.

  • Presets and custom dimensions: choose a common ratio or enter pixel width and height. Custom fields accept values from 64 to 8192; supported generation dimensions also depend on the selected service.
  • Edge hint: describe a background such as pale studio wall or open sky, or leave the field empty when the visible scene supplies enough context.
  • Source comparison: review the original area as well as the new margins. Do not assume an untested pixel-for-pixel lock.
  • Connected workflow: improve a soft source first, then extend the composition and enlarge the chosen result if the destination needs more pixels.

Choose the shape for the destination

Aspect ratio describes shape, not sharpness. Check the platform’s current layout requirements and reserve space around important content.

  • 1:1 square: a balanced starting point for avatars, square product images and feed tiles. Keep important details clear of any circular avatar crop.
  • 4:5 portrait: useful for a taller feed composition when the subject needs room above and below.
  • 16:9 landscape: a common shape for desktop backgrounds, presentation slides and video cover artwork.
  • 9:16 vertical: suits phone backgrounds and vertical story or video-cover layouts; leave space for interface overlays.
  • Custom canvas: enter width and height for a particular design. Check the result’s actual dimensions before placing it into a print or advertising template.

Prepare for a more believable extension

A clear source and a modest framing change give you a more useful result to evaluate.

  • Use the highest-quality original instead of a repeatedly compressed screenshot. Edge texture provides context for the surrounding scene.
  • For a large change in shape, consider smaller extensions and inspect each result. Each new run uses credits and can introduce new mistakes.
  • Keep edge hints short and relevant. A simple sky or studio backdrop may need no text; complex architecture often needs more review rather than a longer prompt.
  • Check horizons, shadow direction and perspective. A clipped hand or chair at the edge can lead to an implausible continuation.

A complete editing order

Separate cleanup, composition and resolution decisions so you can review each change.

  • Before extending, remove distracting text or brush-marked clutter that touches an edge, then check the repaired area.
  • If a portrait is soft, enhance the source and compare the person’s features before continuing.
  • After choosing a satisfactory extended composition, use Image Upscaler when you need a larger digital file.

Upscale the finished composition

What an extender cannot establish

  • Extension adds surrounding content; it is not a substitute for increasing detail within the same crop. Use an upscaler for that separate task.
  • This tool starts from an existing image, rather than making a picture from an empty text-only canvas.
  • The goal is to retain the source composition, not move or redesign the subject. Check for unexpected changes instead of assuming a perfect lock.
  • Generated borders cannot reveal the true people, logos or objects that were outside the photograph. New scene details are predictions.

Who uses an extended canvas?

A different frame can make an existing image usable in more layouts, provided the generated area is appropriate for the purpose.

  • Creators and social media managers: adapt a still for a feed tile, vertical cover or wide video thumbnail while protecting room around the subject.
  • Designers and web developers: prepare an image for a slide or website banner with space for a headline added in a layout tool.
  • Merchants: add studio-style margins for product copy, then verify that the actual product and label remain accurate.
  • Photographers and wallpaper users: create a different display shape without simply stretching a travel photograph.
