Convert JPG to PNG online

Create a PNG copy of a JPG for editing, layout or a destination that expects a losslessly encoded raster file. Convert for free in your browser without uploading the image or using editing credits. The pixel dimensions stay the same, and the JPEG’s background remains opaque.

Convert JPG to PNG in three steps

01

Choose a JPEG image

Select, drop or paste one JPG or JPEG up to 15 MB and 40 megapixels. Keep the original when its metadata or original compressed file matters.

02

Create the PNG locally

Choose Convert image. Your browser decodes the photograph and encodes its rendered pixels as PNG without sending the file to a conversion server.

03

Inspect and download the copy

Review the PNG and save it before replacing the source. The file may be larger than the JPG. Each conversion has an individual download rather than a batch ZIP.

JPG and PNG: what a conversion can preserve

JPEG is commonly used for compact photo delivery. PNG uses lossless compression and can be useful as a raster copy during a design workflow. Converting preserves the rendered image, not detail that earlier JPEG compression already removed.

  • Compression: PNG does not add another lossy JPEG encoding step. It cannot undo previous compression or guarantee that future edits in another app leave the image unchanged.
  • Transparency: PNG can support alpha, but a JPG source has no alpha channel to recover. The converted background stays opaque until a separate editing operation removes it.
  • Design handoff: import the PNG into a compatible editor or layout tool. It is a flat bitmap, not a layered project, vector illustration or editable text document.
  • Lines and lettering: PNG can store the currently rendered edges without further lossy encoding. Existing JPEG ringing, blur and blocks do not disappear through conversion.

Three uses for a PNG copy

Keep the source and use a PNG when it fits the next stage of your workflow.

  • Editing intermediates: avoid another JPEG compression pass when saving the current raster image. Actual edits, resizing and color transformations can still change pixels.
  • Compositing and cutouts: use the PNG in an editor that supports masks or background removal, then perform that separate edit there. Conversion alone does not extract the subject or add layers.
  • Asset libraries and print preparation: store a losslessly encoded rendered copy when useful. Retain the original too, because camera metadata, source color profiles and professional print requirements are not preserved guarantees of this browser export.

A free local converter for an individual file

The format change needs no registration, subscription, editing credits or added watermark.

  • Browser processing: decoding and PNG encoding happen on your device. Time and memory requirements vary by image and browser, without a fixed speed promise.
  • No conversion upload: the photo is not sent to a cloud converter or stored there by this operation. A later AI edit is a separate workflow.
  • Individual downloads: process one image within 15 MB / 40 MP, save it, then choose the next. There is no batch queue or ZIP archive.
  • Separate AI tools: enhancement and enlargement can serve a different purpose after conversion. They use paid credits, remote processing and inferred detail that needs review.

Need sharper detail or a larger image?

A new PNG extension does not sharpen the photo or increase its width and height. Use a dedicated enhancer for softness or Image Upscaler for a larger output. Compare the result with the original rather than treating generated detail as recovered evidence.
